Overview

Darma opens off Dharchula through Sobla and climbs to Dantu and Duktu — the base villages beneath the Panchachuli massif, the five peaks named for the hearths on which the Pandavas cooked their final meal. We run it as one winter expedition: three nights at Darma 360 in Dantu, the base camp walk in snow, the last villages by 4x4, and a hot spring on the way out.

Starting elsewhere? We also run Darma Valley from Delhi in 6 days and from Haldwani in 6 days.

4x4s in the valley

A convoy of local 4x4s with hill drivers takes the gorge, the last villages at Tidang and Sipu, and the road out past the Dar hot spring.

Eligibility

A winter expedition, not a climb: the valley is driven by 4x4, and the one long walk is the base camp day in snow. What matters is warm layers, steady legs and how you are on the day.

Age
There is no number to clear, but this is a winter week with nights below freezing. Tell us about children and older travellers first, and we will say honestly.
Fitness
The base camp day is about three hours on foot each way in snow, at a guide's pace; if the path is deep, the guide turns at the safest point. Everything else is by Tempo Traveller and 4x4.
Altitude
The route reaches ~3,400 m, with three nights at Dantu, about 3,150 m, after a night in Pithoragarh on the way up.
Tell us first
Heart conditions, asthma, uncontrolled blood pressure or diabetes, pregnancy, or recent surgery. We will say honestly if we have concerns.
