The range you look across at from Munsiyari is Panchachuli, and here is the rest of the town

Munsiyari is a hill town at 2,200 m in the Gori valley of Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, about 623 km from Delhi by road, looking straight across at the Panchachuli range. It suits families with children and parents who want the Himalaya without high altitude: our trips run 4 days from Haldwani and 5 days from Delhi, with one day on foot in them, the Khaliya Top walk.

TL;DRThe post in 5 lines

  • A Munsiyari trip with Adi Kailash Explore costs ₹14,400 a person from Haldwani and ₹20,400 from Delhi; the budget post prices the same three nights by bus, by taxi and as a package.
  • Munsiyari departures run May to November, with May, June, September and October the drier months; the weather post sets out the month by month picture and when snow falls.
  • Khaliya Top, a meadow ridge at around 3,500 m, is walked on day 2 of both trips, a morning that a reasonably fit family can manage.
  • Trains stop at Kathgodam, about 282 km short of the town, and flights at Pantnagar; the reaching Munsiyari post sets out the route, the hours and the bus and train options.
  • Munsiyari suits first-timers, families with children and parents who want the Himalaya without a high-altitude route, as 2,200 m needs no acclimatisation day.

Where is Munsiyari?

Munsiyari is a town at 2,200 m in the Gori valley, Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, facing the Panchachuli range, about 623 km from Delhi.

You climb all morning out of the Kumaon foothills, one ridge after another, and for hours the snow stays somewhere behind the trees. Then the last bend before the town turns, and the Panchachuli range is simply there, across the valley, at eye level.

Munsiyari sits under that view at 2,200 m, on a shelf above the Gori river in Pithoragarh district. It is the same district as the border valleys we drive in the season, but it is a different kind of place: a town you stay in, not a route you pass through.

  • About 623 km from Delhi; about 282 km from the railhead at Kathgodam
  • Season: May to November
  • 4 days from Haldwani, 5 days from Delhi
  • ₹14,400 a person from Haldwani

How high is Munsiyari?

Munsiyari stands at 2,200 m, low enough that altitude is not the problem it becomes in the border valleys.

That height matters more than anything else about the place. There is no acclimatisation day to build in, no oxygen in the vehicle, no long list of conditions to declare before you travel. Khaliya Top, around 3,500 m, is the highest ground on the trip, reached on foot across a morning, with the night spent back down in Munsiyari.

Who Munsiyari suits

It is the trip we recommend for first-timers, for families with children and for parents who want the Himalaya without a high-altitude route.

Most of the day is spent in the town or on short drives around it, with one walk in the middle of the trip. If your parents can manage a slow morning uphill, or are content to wait at the meadow while the rest of the family goes on, Munsiyari works. Anyone in the party with a heart or lung condition should be flagged to us before booking, exactly as on any mountain journey.

Munsiyari weather, in short

Season highs run from 19°C in May to 17°C in October, with July and August far the wettest months.

Weather sites give you today's number; what decides a trip is the shape of the month. May is the driest month of the season at 101 mm, July and August carry 837 mm and 825 mm between them, and October is the coldest month we drive, with 2 frost nights and lows of 5°C. The town sits high enough for snow in deep winter, well outside our season of May to November.

The month by month normals, the snowfall answer, Khaliya Top temperatures and a packing list by season are all in Munsiyari weather month by month.

When Munsiyari trips run

Departures run May to November, and within that window May, June, September and October carry far less rain than July and August.

May and October are the clear-sky months if the Panchachuli view is why you are coming, at 101 mm and 53 mm of rain. June is the month most families can actually travel, mild at 21°C by day before the heavy rain arrives, and the monsoon weeks still run for travellers happy to trade the view for green hills.

For the trade-offs month by month, including which month is the best time to visit, read how to choose your Munsiyari month.

How to reach Munsiyari

Munsiyari is about 623 km from Delhi by road and about 282 km from Kathgodam, the railhead beside Haldwani; Naini Saini at Pithoragarh is the nearest airport, when it has flights.

Every way in ends as a road journey. Trains stop at Kathgodam, about 282 km short of the town, flights at Pantnagar on the plains, and after that the hills take over: a steady climb of most of a day from Kathgodam, and from Delhi a long single day of about 623 km.

The drive leg by leg with honest hours, the train and bus options, the distances from Haldwani, Nainital and Pithoragarh and what monsoon or snow does to the road are all in how to reach Munsiyari from Delhi, Kathgodam or Nainital.

The Khaliya Top trek

Khaliya Top is a meadow ridge at around 3,500 m above Munsiyari, walked on day 2 of both trips, a morning a reasonably fit family can manage.

You start above the town while the valley is still in shadow. The path goes up through rhododendron and open slope, the sound of the road drops away, and then the ground flattens into meadow. From the top the Himalayan skyline arrives all at once, and Zero Point is the short push beyond it.

How difficult is the Khaliya Top trek?

It is a short, genuine Himalayan trek: a morning's walk that a reasonably fit family, children included, can do.

This is one of the two days on foot across our routes, the other being the day towards Panchachuli Base Camp on the Darma trip, and it is deliberately modest. There is no technical ground and no night on the mountain. You walk up, you sit at the top, you are back at a hotel in Munsiyari the same day. Go slowly, drink water, and stop when someone in the party needs to.

How far is Khaliya Top from Munsiyari?

The trail starts above Munsiyari town and the top sits at around 3,500 m, reached in a morning.

We do not publish a trail distance or a stopwatch time for the climb, because the figures you find online vary with where the vehicle drops you and how the forest road is that season. Your guide tells you the evening before exactly where the walk begins and how long your group should allow.

Zero Point

Zero Point is the high point beyond Khaliya Top, and both trips carry on to it the same morning, weather allowing.

The meadow is the reward; the ridge beyond it is the view. Whether the group goes on depends on the cloud and on how everyone is walking, and that call is made on the morning itself.

Is the Khaliya Top trek open now?

It is walked through our season, May to November, but snow, rain and forest department rules decide any given day.

Any entry fee or forest permission that applies changes from season to season, and so do the weeks when the top is clear of snow. We check the current position before each departure rather than working off last year's answer.

Ask us whether Khaliya Top is walkable on your dates before you book.

What to carry for the walk

Sturdy shoes, warm layers for every month, water, sun protection and any personal medication.

  • Shoes with grip: the meadow is wet more often than not
  • A fleece and a windproof layer, even in June
  • Sun cream, a cap and dark glasses for the open slope
  • Water, and something to eat at the top
  • Personal medication carried on you, not left in the vehicle

Places to visit in Munsiyari

Panchachuli View Point, Nanda Devi Temple, the Tribal Heritage Museum, Darkot village and Birthi Falls fill days 1, 3 and 4 of both trips.

Munsiyari is small, and that is rather the point of it. Panchachuli View Point and the market fill the first evening; the Nanda Devi Temple, the Tribal Heritage Museum and Darkot village make one round on day 3; Birthi Falls stands beside the road on the way out. Nothing on the list is a long drive.

Which sights you reach from the vehicle and which ask for a walk, the villages and hot springs below the town, and what Milam Glacier or Chaukori add on spare days are all in every Munsiyari sight, and which ones need a walk.

Where to stay in Munsiyari

Adi Kailash Explore's Munsiyari trips put you in a hotel in Munsiyari for 3 nights from Haldwani; the Delhi trip runs 4 nights, the last of them at Pithoragarh.

Munsiyari has hotels, guest houses, a state tourism rest house and a growing number of homestays. Rooms are simple almost everywhere, which is normal for a town this size. What deserves your attention is not the star rating but which way the windows face.

What is included on our trips

Hotel accommodation, breakfast and dinner and transport for the full route are inside the price; lunch and personal expenses are not.

Rooms run 2 to 5 sharing on the scheduled departures, and private rooms are available on request. We name the property in writing when we confirm your seats, along with the day-by-day plan, so nothing is a surprise at check-in.

If you are booking your own room

Book ahead for May, June and the October weekends: the town is small and it fills up.

Ask for a room on the valley side rather than the road side. That one question decides whether you wake up to Panchachuli or to a parked jeep. Our team in Pithoragarh can tell you what is open on your dates; the phone and WhatsApp number are on the contact page.

Munsiyari or Auli? Munsiyari or Nainital?

Adi Kailash Explore runs Munsiyari and not Auli, so this answer speaks only for Munsiyari: 2,200 m, a Panchachuli view, and Nainital about 261 km down the hill.

Auli is a ski slope in Garhwal with a ropeway; Munsiyari is a quieter Kumaon town where the mountain view is from the street rather than from a lift, and the walking is a meadow trek. Nainital, about 261 km below on the same road, is boats, markets and an evening by the water: a different holiday rather than a rival.

The fuller side by side, which month suits which sight, and how Munsiyari joins a longer Kumaon trip at about 94 km from Dharchula are in Munsiyari against Auli and Nainital, sight by sight.

How many days, and what a Munsiyari trip costs

4 days from Haldwani at ₹14,400 a person, or 5 days from Delhi at ₹20,400 a person, drives included both ways.

Three nights in Munsiyari is the right length: one for the view point and the market, one for Khaliya Top, one for the temple, the museum and Darkot. Anything shorter and the drive eats the holiday. The Haldwani trip covers 4 days and 3 nights, the Delhi trip 5 days and 4 nights, with transport for the full route, hotel stays, breakfast and dinner inside the price.

₹5,000 holds a seat, and lunch and personal expenses stay outside the fare. For the same three nights costed by bus and shared jeep, by taxi for two, four or six, and as a package, read what a Munsiyari trip costs, line by line.

Questions travellers ask

  • For the Panchachuli range, which stands directly across the Gori valley from the town at 2,200 m, and for Khaliya Top, the meadow at around 3,500 m above it. Beyond the view, it is known for the Nanda Devi Temple, the Tribal Heritage Museum on Rung and Shauka culture, Darkot village with its carved wooden houses and woollen shawls, and Birthi Falls on the road in.

  • Yes, as long as the draw is the Himalaya and not a high-altitude route. At 2,200 m there is no acclimatisation to plan for, the drives around the town are short, and there is one genuine trek, Khaliya Top, that a reasonably fit family can do in a morning. It is a quiet town rather than a hill station full of attractions, which is exactly why most of our travellers pick it.

  • Adi Kailash Explore runs Munsiyari and not Kausani, so it will not grade someone else's destination for you. What we can tell you is that Munsiyari sits at 2,200 m, about 282 km from the railhead at Kathgodam, with the Panchachuli range in front of the town and a walkable meadow at around 3,500 m above it. It is further in, and quieter for it.

  • The town sits high enough for winter snow, and Khaliya Top holds it longer than the town does. Our departures run May to November, so the figures we publish cover those months: October, the coldest in our season, averages lows of 5°C and 2 frost nights. For the deep winter we would be guessing, so we print no numbers. Message us for the current position.

  • Taxi fares on this route move with the season, the vehicle and the fuel price, so any figure printed here would be wrong within months. The road distance is about 282 km. For anyone who would rather avoid the sums, the Haldwani trip costs ₹14,400 a person over 4 days, with transport across the full route, stays, breakfast and dinner all covered.

  • Altitude is not a concern at 2,200 m, and the town is quiet and used to travellers. The variable is the road and the weather, particularly in July and August when the month carries 837 mm of rain. We drive Kumaon through the season and will tell you honestly what the road is doing in the week you want to travel, before you commit to dates.

  • Day 1, drive up from Haldwani, check in and take the Panchachuli View Point in the evening light. Day 2, the Khaliya Top and Zero Point walk, back at the hotel by afternoon. Day 3, Nanda Devi Temple, the Tribal Heritage Museum and Darkot village. Day 4, leave in the morning, stop at Birthi Falls, and reach Haldwani by evening. That is the trip we run from Haldwani.

How we made this guide

The figures on this page are filled in from data each time it is built, never typed by hand: prices, days and nights from our package pages; road distances from OpenStreetMap, measured by a router (retrieved 22 September 2026); temperatures from 30-year ERA5-Land climate normals, modelled rather than measured at a weather station. If anything here is out of date, tell us on WhatsApp and we will correct it.
