Why Darma, why winter

Some trips you take. This one you will tell people about for the rest of your life.

People find Darma through one picture: five snow peaks over a village of stone houses. Then they find out it is real, in India, and that a 4x4 can take you almost to their foot. In winter it is quieter and whiter than any picture of it.

As the films say
“Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyaan le ke chal rahe ho, toh zinda ho tum.”
If you still carry that restlessness in your heart, you are alive.Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

  • The tradeFor centuries their families crossed the high passes to Tibet with grain and cloth, and came back with salt, wool and borax. The border closed in 1962; the stories did not.
  • The languageDarma has its own tongue, Darmiya, spoken by a few thousand people and never written down. The community is building its first dictionary now.
  • The craftWool is everything: hand-woven carpets called dan, shawls, and the chuba, a long woollen robe still worn for festivals.
  • Jasuli DatalA widow of Dantu who, the story goes, gave her fortune to build rest houses for travellers across Kumaon and into Nepal. Her village is on your road.

  • A 6-day, 5-night winter trip from Delhi into the Darma Valley in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, run by Adi Kailash Explore. A Tempo Traveller takes you to Dharchula, a convoy of local 4x4s takes you into Darma, you stay three nights at Darma 360 in Dantu, walk to Panchachuli Base Camp in the snow, drive on to Tidang and Sipu, and finish at the Dar hot spring and Narayan Ashram.

  • Every Friday at 10 pm from Delhi, from 27 November to 18 December 2026: 27 November, 4 December, 11 December, 18 December. You are back in Delhi on the Thursday night, around 1 to 2 am. At Christmas the group leaves on Tuesday 22 December and is back on Monday 28 December, with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Darma and the Christmas party at Darma 360 (₹65,000 a person). There are no departures in January to March.

  • ₹55,000 a person, twin sharing, Delhi to Delhi. It covers the Tempo Traveller and the 4x4s, 5 nights' stay, all meals, a trip leader, a guide from the valley, the Darma registration, and the photographs and short film of your departure. ₹5,000 holds your seat. Paragliding is optional and paid to the pilot.

  • Yes. In December the path from Dugtu to the base camp is under snow, and with a guide from the valley, microspikes and gaiters it is a walk, not a climb. Snow sets the pace: if the path is deep the guide turns at the safest point, and a spare day in the valley gives the walk a second chance.

  • About three hours on foot each way from Dugtu, the village above Dantu, starting at 6 am. The base camp is at 3,400 m and up; Zero Point, a little further towards the glaciers, is at about 3,962 m. If you can walk 10 km on a weekend, you are fit enough.

  • Delhi to Dantu is about 640 km by road: Delhi to Pithoragarh overnight, Pithoragarh to Dharchula on the Kali, then up the Dhauliganga gorge by Tawaghat and Sobla to Dantu, the last stretch by 4x4. From Dugtu, just above Dantu, the base camp is a walk of about three hours.

  • Yes, the villages are reached in December by 4x4, in daylight only and out of the valley's roads before 4 pm. Snow can close a road for a day, which is why the expedition keeps a spare day in Darma. We confirm the road every week before the Friday departure.

  • Most nights in Darma are below 0°C; Pithoragarh and Dharchula are about 3 to 6°C at night. The days are bright and dry, with sun on the snow. Darma 360 has a fireplace, thick quilts and hot water, so dress in layers and you will be comfortable.

  • You need an original photo ID, Aadhaar or a passport, for the Darma registration. We file the registration for you before you arrive.

  • One night in a hotel in Pithoragarh, three nights at Darma 360 in Dantu, a premium stay with a fireplace and Panchachuli straight ahead from the balcony, and one night in a hotel in Dharchula.

  • No. There is no signal and no ATM above Dharchula. Carry cash, tell your family before you go, and the trip leader keeps everyone's emergency contacts.

  • Anyone fit for one long walk in the snow. On the other days the 4x4s do the work, so it suits friends, couples and families alike, and you can come alone and join the group.
