Darma Valley, Uttarakhand: Weather, Homestays, Trek, Route

North of Dharchula, in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, a side road leaves the Kali at Tawaghat and runs up the Dhauli Ganga to Sobla, about 37 km out from Dharchula, before climbing into Darma and ending at Dantu and Duktu, the base villages under the Panchachuli peaks. Most travellers do it in 6 days from Delhi, sleeping in Rung family homes. It suits people who want the high Himalaya without a crowd around them.

Is the Darma valley road open now?

As of

Open in winter: the road to Dantu is driven by 4x4, with families in the villages

Winter
Families stay on in Dantu and Dugtu through the winter, and the road from Dharchula is driven in local 4x4s with hill drivers, in snow. Our Panchachuli Base Camp Expedition stays at Darma 360 in Dantu every Friday to 18 December, and at Christmas, 22 to 28 December. (Adi Kailash Explore's team in Darma, 6 November 2026)
The road
The road from Sobla reaches Dugtu and Dantu. It reopened on 8 September 2026, light vehicles first, after the monsoon had cut the valley off on 5 September. Earlier this year it closed for an avalanche between Baling and Dugtu (2 April) and for rockfalls at Pangbawe (7 to 9 June, 21 July). (Amar Ujala, 8 September 2026; Amar Ujala, 5 September 2026; Amar Ujala, 3 April 2026; Amar Ujala, 10 June 2026)
Permits
The district's online permit covers Adi Kailash and Om Parvat only, and no official rule for Darma is published. Reports differ on whether Indian travellers need one for Darma: carry government photo ID, and ask us for your dates. (The district's permit portal, checked 21 October 2026; AajTak, 14 June 2026; ETV Bharat, 3 April 2026)

Where is Darma Valley, and what is it?

Darma sits in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, reached where the road parts from the Kali at Tawaghat and traces the Dhauli Ganga through Sobla to Dantu and Duktu under the Panchachuli massif.

Dharchula sits on the Kali at 908 m, and most travellers pass through it on the way to somewhere else. Darma is the turning they miss. Past the Tawaghat turning, the road follows the Dhauli Ganga through Sobla, about 37 km from Dharchula, and climbs away into a side valley of river gorges and hanging fields.

At the top of that road are Dantu and Duktu, the base villages under the Panchachuli massif. There is no hotel up there in any real sense. You stay in a house with a Rung family, eat what the kitchen cooks, and walk out in the morning with the five peaks standing at the head of the valley.

What a Darma trip actually looks like

Drive in through Dharchula and Sobla to Dantu, give one full day to Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point and Duktu, then drive back down.

  • In: up through Pithoragarh, Dharchula and Sobla, ending at Dantu
  • The valley day: Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point, road conditions permitting, then Duktu village
  • Nights: Rung homestays at Dantu, two of them, breakfast and dinner included
  • Out: down the valley to Pithoragarh, then Haldwani or Delhi

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits travellers happy with long mountain drives, simple rooms and cold nights, and less so anyone who needs a hotel and a fixed schedule.

This is not a resort valley and the plan bends to the road rather than the other way round. If someone in your party has a heart or lung condition, tell us before you book: the villages are high and the nights are cold in every month we run.

How to reach Darma Valley, in short

The approach is all road: Delhi to Pithoragarh is about 480 km, then Dharchula, the turn at Tawaghat, Sobla at about 37 km, and the climb to Dantu.

You come up the Kumaon hills to Pithoragarh, follow the Kali to Dharchula, about 91 km on, and turn off the river road at Tawaghat, up the Dhauli Ganga to Sobla. Nothing on the way in is trekked. From Delhi the drive is split over two days, with the first night at Pithoragarh; from Haldwani it is one long driving day into the valley.

Above Sobla the road climbs to Dantu and Duktu, and how far it is running in a given week depends on snow, rain and repair work, which is why both itineraries say road conditions permitting. For every leg, the km figures, the bus, train and air options and the permit question, read Delhi to Darma Valley distance, leg by leg.

The Panchachuli Base Camp walk, and Zero Point

From Dantu the day goes up towards Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point, road conditions permitting, and takes in Duktu village, with the evening back at the homestay.

You get one full day for this on both trips, and the whole valley plan is built around it. You start from the house at Dantu after breakfast, go up the valley towards the five peaks, and come back to the same bed at night. Duktu is on the same day.

Is the Panchachuli Base Camp trek difficult?

It is a walk at altitude whose distance and hours depend on how far up the valley the vehicle gets that week, so we confirm the day in writing before you book.

We are not going to print a kilometre figure and an hour count for a walk whose starting point moves with the road. Send us your dates and who is travelling, and you will get the day as it will actually run for your group, including how much of it is on foot. Flag any heart or lung condition at the outset, before anything else is discussed.

Can you reach Panchachuli Base Camp by car?

The road continues some way above the villages, and how far a vehicle gets changes with the season and the condition of the road.

That is the honest answer to a question a lot of people search for. Both itineraries say Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point, road conditions permitting, and which of the two the day reaches is decided by the road on the morning, not in advance.

Ask us how far the valley road is running this season before you book the base camp day.

Darma Valley weather and the best time to visit

Departures run May to December, and at Dharchula, the mouth of the valley, May highs run 28°C while July brings 495 mm of rain.

There is no weather station at Dantu whose numbers we can put in front of you, and we will not borrow another village's figures and label them Dantu. What we can give you honestly is Dharchula, at the bottom of the road, as modelled climate normals. Read them as the warm end of the scale: the villages sit far higher and are far colder.

July27°C22°C495 mm

Climate normals 1991 to 2020 for Dharchula, 908 m, modelled from ERA5-Land and not a weather station, retrieved 22 September 2026. Dantu and Duktu stand much higher and colder.

The monsoon months

July and August are the wet ones at Dharchula, 495 mm and 449 mm of rain, and hill roads take that badly.

Rain is what slows and closes a road like this one. If you travel in those weeks, keep your return flexible by a day and expect the base camp plan to follow whatever the road allows.

How cold does it get up at the villages?

Cold enough at night in every month of the season that warm layers belong in your bag even in June.

Days can be pleasant and the same evening can turn sharp within an hour of the light going. Pack warm layers, your own medicines, sturdy shoes and a government photo ID, and you are ready for the valley.

Which month is best to visit Darma Valley?

Departures run May to December, and which weeks suit you depends on the road and on what the snow has done that year.

That is a question for a person, not a table. The season moves a little every year, and we would rather tell you what the valley is like in your fortnight than publish a month and leave you to find out.

Ask us which weeks are running in Darma this season, and what the snow has done.

Homestays with Rung families: what to expect

You sleep in Rung family homes at Dantu, two nights on both trips, with breakfast and dinner included, because there is no hotel in the valley in any real sense.

A Darma homestay is a room in somebody's house. You get a bed, blankets, hot food from the family's own kitchen and a place by the fire in the evening. What you do not get is a reception desk, a menu card or room service.

Rooms are simple and the hospitality is not. Travellers who arrive expecting a hotel are the only ones who come away disappointed, so we say it plainly before anyone books.

What is in the price

Transport for the full route, the homestay and hotel nights, breakfast and dinner, and local support on the road; lunch and personal expenses are yours.

ID, and what papers Darma needs

Carry a government photo ID: this is a border district and identity is checked on the road, and we confirm in writing what else applies to your dates.

The Inner Line Permit we file for travellers is the Vyas valley one, issued at SDM Dharchula for Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. For Darma, send us your dates and the names in your party and we will tell you exactly what is required for that season rather than leave you guessing at a counter.

Ask us what ID and papers your Darma dates need before you travel.

The villages and the Rung people

Dantu and Duktu are the two base villages of upper Darma, Rung settlements under the Panchachuli where the homestays are and where the valley days begin and end.

Dantu is where you sleep on both trips, both nights. It is a working village, not a base for an industry: fields, houses, animals, and a lane that ends where the mountains start.

Duktu is the other village on the plan, seen on the base camp day. The two sit close under the massif, and for most travellers the strongest hour of the trip is an ordinary one: standing outside the house in the cold, watching the light move across the five peaks.

Why the peaks are called Panchachuli

Panchachuli means five hearths: the story is that the Pandavas cooked their last meal on them.

You will hear the story in the valley, told without ceremony, the way people tell you about the field next door.

Staying well with a Rung family

You are a guest in a working home rather than a customer in a lodge, and the valley runs better when travellers remember it.

  • Ask before photographing a house, a kitchen or a person
  • Follow the family on shoes, the fire and the kitchen
  • Keep your rubbish with you until you are back down the valley
  • Say your dietary needs when you book, not at the table

Darma or Munsiyari? The same Panchachuli from two sides

Munsiyari looks across at the Panchachuli from a hill town about 125 km from Pithoragarh, while Darma puts travellers under the same peaks at Dantu and Duktu.

Munsiyari is the comfortable side: hotels, an easier road and Khaliya Top for the morning walk, 4 days from Haldwani at ₹14,400 a person. Darma is 6 days from Haldwani at ₹50,000 a person, with a longer drive, Rung homestays and the base camp day under the near face.

Which side suits you depends on who is travelling, how many days you have and how much walking you want. For the verdict traveller by traveller, read Munsiyari or Darma Valley: which side suits which traveller.

What a Darma Valley trip costs, and the two trips we run

From Haldwani the trip is ₹50,000 a person for 6 days; from Delhi, ₹55,000 a person for 6 days. Both figures cover transport, stays and two meals every day.

One price, written before you pay anything, with the day plan next to it. Driver allowance, tolls and parking are already inside it.

  • Transport for the full route, from the city your package names and back to it
  • Stays: homestays at Dantu, hotel nights at Pithoragarh
  • Breakfast and dinner every day
  • Local support on the road, driver allowance, tolls and parking
  • Not included: lunch and personal expenses

Darma Valley from Haldwani

6 days, ₹50,000 a person, driving in from Haldwani through Pithoragarh with two nights at Dantu.

Day one is the long one, Haldwani to the homestay. Day two is the valley day. Day three comes back down to Pithoragarh for the night, and day four drops you at Haldwani. The full plan is on the Haldwani trip.

Darma Valley from Delhi

6 days, ₹55,000 a person, with the first night at Pithoragarh and two nights in the homestay at Dantu.

The Delhi trip splits the drive, so nobody does Delhi to Darma in one push. Day two takes you in through Dharchula and Sobla, day three is the base camp day, day four brings you back. The day-by-day is on Darma Valley from Delhi.

How to book

Send your dates on WhatsApp, get one price in writing with the day plan, and hold your seats with ₹5,000.

Scheduled departures are shared groups, so a solo traveller joins one rather than paying for a vehicle alone, and any of these can also run on your own dates as a private group. Days the road does not allow are not charged. Our office and numbers are on contact.

Questions travellers ask about the Darma valley

  • Carry a government photo ID: this is a border district and identity gets checked on the road. What paperwork applies to Darma on your dates is something we confirm in writing before you book, because it is set by the administration and can change between seasons. The Inner Line Permit we file for travellers is the Vyas valley one, for Adi Kailash and Om Parvat.

  • Yes, the valley is reached by road and both Adi Kailash Explore trips drive in: Dharchula, then Sobla, then up to Dantu, where you sleep in a homestay. How far a vehicle gets above the villages on the Panchachuli Base Camp day depends on the state of the road that week, which is why both itineraries say base camp or Zero Point, road conditions permitting.

  • 6 days from Delhi and 6 days from Haldwani, both there and back. The Delhi trip spends the first night at Pithoragarh and reaches Dantu on day two. The Haldwani trip drives in on day one, in one long day. Both then give a full day to Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point and Duktu village before turning back down the valley.

  • The Panchachuli. Darma is the valley directly under the five peaks, and Dantu and Duktu are the base villages travellers stay in. It is also known for how it is travelled: no hotels in any real sense, so the nights are in Rung family homes, and the centre of the trip is a day spent going up towards Panchachuli Base Camp.

  • If you want the Himalaya without a crowd, yes. What you get is a drive up a river gorge, two nights in a village house under the five peaks and one full day given to the base camp. What you do not get is hotel comfort, a certain road or a schedule the weather respects. Travellers who want those are happier at Munsiyari.

  • The road runs Pithoragarh to Dharchula, about 91 km, then Dharchula to Sobla, about 37 km, and climbs from there to Dantu and Duktu at the foot of the peaks. It is a full driving day from Pithoragarh, not a morning outing. From the other side, Munsiyari looks at the same range and is about 125 km from Pithoragarh.
