Munsiyari weather month by month, and the weeks when the snow actually falls
Munsiyari swings from 7°C days and -4°C nights in January to 21°C in June, with snow on about 8 days in an average January and none at all between March and November. That is the pattern month by month, taken from 1991 to 2020 climate normals. For what the sky is doing today, a live forecast is the right place, and the first section says which one to open.

How is the weather in Munsiyari right now, and which forecast should you check?
For today's Munsiyari temperature, open a live forecast such as the India Meteorological Department's city page for the town.
Be clear about what this page is. It carries no live number, and it is not trying to: a page written in September cannot tell you what next Thursday will do above the Gori valley.
What it can tell you is what the pattern usually does in the month you are planning, which is the part you actually book on.
Where to check today's Munsiyari temperature
The India Meteorological Department publishes a city page for Munsiyari, and the international model sites carry hourly and multi-day runs for the same point.
- IMD's city page for Munsiyari, for the official Indian forecast and any warning in force
- meteoblue, yr.no, AccuWeather, Weather.com or Weather Underground for hour-by-hour and multi-day model runs
- Check that the page names Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand: the town is also indexed as Munsyari and Munsari, and the spellings scatter across forecast sites
Why two forecast sites can show very different numbers for the same day
Forecast sites run different models on different grid squares, and in a valley as steep as the Gori a few kilometres sideways changes the reading.
A grid point set lower in the valley reads warmer than the town. A point on the ridge above reads colder. Read the shape of the forecast rather than the decimal: is rain coming, how far does the overnight low fall, is a warning in force. Then set your expectation for the degrees from the normals below.
What a town forecast does not tell you about Khaliya Top
A Munsiyari town forecast describes the town; Khaliya Top stands well above it and can hold snow when the town has none.
If a day on foot is your reason for coming, the Khaliya Top walk section further down deals with that gap.
Munsiyari temperature month by month
Munsiyari averages 7°C by day in January and 21°C in June, with monthly highs, lows, rain, snow days and frost nights tabled below.
The town looks straight across at the Panchachuli wall, and its year has a shape you can plan around. A long cold winter with snow. A short bright spring. Then July and August, which rain and rain. Then a dry, cold autumn that most travellers come for without quite knowing why.
मुनस्यारी का मौसम, the same question in Hindi, has the same answer in this table: cold and snowy from December to February, very wet in July and August, dry and clear in October and November.

The coldest months and the warmest months
January is the coldest month with 28 frost nights in an average year, and June to August are warmest at around 21°C by day.
Winter is not one block. December runs 10°C by day and -2°C at night, January drops to 7°C and -4°C, and February starts the climb back at 8°C and -2°C. The frost count tells it more usefully: 28 nights below freezing in January, 23 in February, 16 still in March.
Summer never gets hot here. July and August sit at 21°C by day with nights of 16°C and 15°C. June days reach 21°C but nights hold at 12°C, which is colder than most plains visitors pack for.
How much rain falls, month by month
July and August dominate the Munsiyari year at 837 mm and 825 mm, while October and November drop to 53 mm and 49 mm.
The build-up starts in June at 315 mm and thins through September at 288 mm. Then it stops. October and November are the two driest months in the whole record, and that is the entire reason autumn has the name it has here.
Winter is wetter than it looks. January carries 146 mm and February 165 mm, a good part of it arriving cold, as snow or sleet rather than rain.
Reading the table: normals are averages, not your dates
Normals average thirty years of Munsiyari weather together, so a single January can be milder, or far snowier, than the figures suggest.
Treat the table as the odds, not the outcome.
Is there snowfall in Munsiyari, and when does it snow?
Snow falls in Munsiyari mainly from December to February, with about 8 snow days in January, 4 in February and 2 in December.
Snow here is in the record, and it can be counted, month by month rather than as a season label.
Which months get snow
January leads with about 8 snow days in the normals, followed by February with 4 and December with 2.
Every other month in the 1991 to 2020 normals shows no snow days at town level. That is the honest month-level answer: the middle of winter, weighted heavily towards January.
When the first and last snow usually fall
December is the first month in the normals with snow days and February the last, with November and March showing frost but no snowfall in the average.
November brings 11 frost nights without snow in an average year, so the cold arrives before the snow does. March turns it around: 16 frost nights, no snow days in the record, and whatever white you see is usually old snow lying in shade or sitting on the slopes above the town.
Does the snow settle in the town, or only above it?
The normals count days on which snow falls, not how deep it lies, so depth in Munsiyari town varies from one winter to the next.
What the data supports is frequency: about 8 days of snowfall in an average January, in a month where almost every night is below freezing, so what falls has a reason to stay.
A December or New Year week can also miss the snow altogether. In January 2026 travellers who had driven up for it went home without seeing any, as the Northern Gazette reported from a snowless Munsiyari on 7 January that year. The normals put about 2 snow days in December against 8 in January, and that is a long-run average rather than a forecast for the last week of December 2026 or the first week of January 2027.
Can you still reach Munsiyari when it snows?
Reaching Munsiyari in a snow week depends on the drive rather than the town, and that answer changes winter by winter.
In an average January snow falls on about 8 days and almost every night is below freezing. Munsiyari sits about 125 km from Pithoragarh and about 285 km from Haldwani, with hill road for very nearly every kilometre. We do not publish a rule for that stretch, because there is not an honest one to publish.
Which month is the best time to visit Munsiyari?
October and November suit clear Panchachuli views, April to June suit the Khaliya Top walk, and January and February suit anyone who came for snow.
Ask the question by purpose. Views, snow, the Khaliya Top walk and a family holiday do not all want the same month, and the table answers each of them differently.
Best months for clear Panchachuli views
October and November are the lowest-rain months of the Munsiyari year, which is when the Panchachuli line shows most reliably.
After the monsoon washes the air, the peaks come back. October days hold 17°C with only 2 frost nights, so mornings are cold without being punishing. November is colder, 1°C at night and 11 frost nights, and the light is harder and cleaner for it. The Darma valley sees the same wall from the other side.

Best months for snow
January is the strongest month for snow in Munsiyari with about 8 snow days, and February is second at 4.
Come for snow and accept the cold that carries it: 28 freezing nights in January and day highs of 7°C.
The holiday week is the one most people are actually asking about. Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday 25 December and New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027, so Friday 25 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027 is ten days away for four days of leave, going by the central government holiday list for 2026 and the holiday list for 2027. One aggregator reading the Directorate of Education calendar puts the Delhi school winter break at 1 to 15 January 2027, which is worth confirming with the school before dates are fixed. The same shape returns a year later: Friday 24 December 2027 is Christmas Eve and a restricted holiday in the central list, which makes 24 December 2027 to Sunday 2 January 2028 the 2027-28 window, with Christmas itself on the Saturday.
Best months for the Khaliya Top trek
April to June and late September to early November are the settled months for the Khaliya Top walk, with little rain and few or no freezing nights.
April runs 15°C by day with just 2 frost nights. May reaches 19°C with 101 mm of rain, and June is warmer but already wetter at 315 mm. October is the other clean window. In deep winter, with frost nights in the town, the meadow can be a snow walk, which is a different day out and a different level of preparation.
Best months for spring and for families
March and April are the spring months in these hills, and April, May and October are the gentlest for families.
March still carries 16 frost nights, so April is the easier of the two with older parents or small children: 15°C by day, 4°C at night, and very little rain at 72 mm.
The months to avoid, and why
Rain peaks across July and August in Munsiyari, the pair of months when a traveller stands to lose the view and the road at once.
Deep winter is not a month to avoid, it is a month to choose deliberately. July and August are the ones that disappoint people who came for Panchachuli and spent three days looking at cloud.
- One month for a first visit: October, for dry days and the clearest view of the peaks
- One month for snow: January, with warm clothing planned for indoors as well as out
Khaliya Top weather and temperature
Khaliya Top stands well above Munsiyari town, so it runs colder than any town forecast and can hold snow after the town is clear.
The town column in the table is the floor for a Khaliya Top day, not the forecast for it. Height and wind do the rest.

How much colder is Khaliya Top than Munsiyari town?
Air cools steadily with height, so the meadow above Munsiyari runs below the town figures, and the figures on this page are modelled for the town, not measured on the top.
Any exact temperature you read for Khaliya Top is therefore an estimate. Work from the town instead: October averages 17°C by day and 5°C at night, April 15°C and 4°C, and the top is colder than both before you count the wind on open ground.
When there is snow on the Khaliya trail
The meadow can still be under snow in months when Munsiyari town records no snowfall at all, because it is higher and freezes harder at night.
In the normals the town shows no snow days from March to November. That is the town. March still runs 16 frost nights down there, and what fell in January and February does not leave the meadow on the town's schedule.
So for a March or early April walk, plan on waterproof boots with grip rather than trainers, a second pair of dry socks, and gloves. It is what turns a snow walk into a good morning instead of a wet one.
For the snow lying on the Khaliya trail in your week, send us the dates on WhatsApp.
What the weather does to the view from the top
Clear post-monsoon air in October and November gives the widest view from Khaliya Top, while monsoon cloud can close it entirely for days at a time.
On both of our Munsiyari trips, Khaliya Top and Zero Point are day two.
Monsoon in Munsiyari: rain, landslides and the road
July and August bring 837 mm and 825 mm of rain, the months when landslips and slow clearance are most likely on the hill roads.
How much rain falls in July, August and September
September eases to 288 mm in the 1991 to 2020 normals, well down from the July and August figures above but still a wet month.
By the end of September the rain is thinning, and in the record it has largely gone by mid-October. July does not arrive politely spread across the weeks either: it comes in spells.
What the rain does to the drive
Heavy monsoon rain loosens hill slopes across Kumaon, and the long road stretches to Munsiyari are where delays are felt rather than the town itself.
Haldwani to Munsiyari is about 285 km, Kathgodam to Munsiyari about 282 km, Nainital to Munsiyari about 261 km. The Haldwani itinerary treats that stretch as a full day of mountain driving in dry weather.
As of September 2026 we write this as what a wet spell usually does, not as a rule: delays come from the road rather than the destination, and how long one lasts is a question for the day. Check conditions the day before you travel.
Travelling in the monsoon: what to plan for
Monsoon travel to Munsiyari works if the plan carries slack: early starts, no tight return connection, and a check on road conditions before leaving.
- Leave early each morning: clearance work and daylight both favour the first half of the day
- Keep a spare day before any flight or train you cannot miss
- Carry rain gear you can walk in, not just an umbrella
- Check road conditions the day before you travel, not a week before
The season has its own case. The falls run full, the valley is loud with water, and the hills are as green as they get. What you give up is the view of the peaks and a schedule you can rely on.
What to pack for Munsiyari, by season
Warm layers work in every Munsiyari month; add rain gear from June to September and proper snow footwear from December to February.
The mistake people make is packing for the day high and forgetting the night low. Even in May, when the town reaches 19°C, it falls to 7°C after dark, and you will be outside for some of that.
Summer and monsoon, April to September
Light layers with one warm jacket cover Munsiyari's summer, and waterproofs and quick-drying shoes become essential from June onwards.
- A fleece or light down jacket for evenings, whatever the daytime figure says
- Rain jacket and a dry bag or cover for camera and papers from June to September
- Shoes with grip: wet stone and mud on the Khaliya trail are unforgiving
- A cap and sunscreen, because the sun is strong by day even when the air is cool
Autumn, October and November
October and November in Munsiyari are dry and bright by day and close to freezing at night, so layers beat one heavy coat.
- A thermal base layer for mornings and for the meadow
- A proper warm jacket: November averages 11 frost nights
- Gloves and a woollen cap for trek day
Winter and snow, December to February
Winter in Munsiyari means most nights below freezing, so insulated footwear, thermals and a heavy jacket are the minimum.
- Waterproof, insulated boots with grip on ice, not trainers
- Thermals worn top and bottom, under a heavy outer layer
- Gloves, cap, woollen socks, and a second dry pair in the day bag
- Something warm to wear indoors as well, because evenings are spent sitting still
Go further up the same district and you'll pack heavier still. Gunji's months sit in the Adi Kailash weather guide.
Is Munsiyari safe to visit now, and how many days do you need?
Safety at Munsiyari is a weather and road question rather than a town one, and Adi Kailash Explore's two Munsiyari trips run 4 days and 5 days, drive included.
Is Munsiyari safe to visit right now?
Munsiyari is a settled hill town, and the variables worth checking before travel are rain, snow and the state of the road.
The useful safety check is not really about the destination. It is about the day or two of driving that reaches it. In the monsoon that means landslips. In deep winter it means whatever the snow has done to the last hours of the drive, which is a day-by-day answer. In April, May and October it usually means neither.
Anyone with a heart or chest condition should talk to their own doctor about cold exposure before a winter trip or the Khaliya Top walk. That conversation belongs with a doctor who knows your history, not with a tour page.
How many days to stay in Munsiyari
Adi Kailash Explore runs Munsiyari as 4 days from Haldwani and 5 days from Delhi, both including the drive in each direction.
Both itineraries give day two to Khaliya Top and Zero Point. Day three covers Darkot village, the Tribal Heritage Museum and the Nanda Devi temple, with Birthi Falls on the way out. Cut it shorter and most of your leave goes on the drive itself: Delhi to Munsiyari is about 623 km.
Want the day-by-day plan, the beds and what the price covers? Day by day coverage sits in the Haldwani itinerary and the Delhi one. The Munsiyari trip guide covers the town, market and walk. The team that replies to you sits in our Pithoragarh office, about 125 km away.
Tell us the month you have in mind and we will confirm which Munsiyari departures run then.
Combining Munsiyari with Adi Kailash or Darma
Munsiyari sits about 94 km from Dharchula, the town where the Vyas valley and Darma valley roads begin, so the trips pair on one Kumaon route.
The Adi Kailash road has its own season, May to November, and figures far colder than these: Gunji in January averages -2°C by day against Munsiyari's 7°C. If you are planning both in one trip, the month that suits Munsiyari and the month the high road allows are not always the same one.
Questions travellers ask
Munsiyari is far milder. January averages 7°C by day and -4°C at night, against -2°C and -14°C at Gunji, which sits at 3,200 m in the Vyas valley. In June, Munsiyari reaches 21°C while Gunji records 16°C. Both sets of figures come from the same 1991 to 2020 normals.
The Adi Kailash Explore team measures these distances on OpenStreetMap, last checked 22 September 2026.You reach Munsiyari by road, climbing out of the Kumaon plains. Haldwani to Munsiyari is about 285 km, Kathgodam about 282 km, Nainital about 261 km, Pithoragarh about 125 km and Delhi about 623 km. Dharchula, for the border valleys, is about 94 km away. Hill kilometres eat far more time than plains ones, whatever the season.
Yes, and winter is wetter than it looks. January carries 146 mm and February 165 mm in the 1991 to 2020 normals, much of it arriving as snow or sleet at town level. May adds 101 mm in pre-monsoon showers. The genuinely dry stretch of the year is October and November.
Cold decides it. January averages 28 nights below freezing with day highs of 7°C, so the cold is felt for most of the day and not only on the walk. April, May and October are much easier months for a family trip. Anyone with a heart, chest or blood pressure condition should ask their own doctor about cold exposure before booking winter dates.
Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday 25 December and New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027, so Friday 25 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027 is a ten-day window that costs four days of leave. The 2027-28 version runs from Friday 24 December 2027, Christmas Eve and a restricted holiday in the central government list, to Sunday 2 January 2028, with Christmas Day itself on the Saturday. December days in Munsiyari average 10°C, the nights -2°C. Snow falls on about 2 days in the month. Pack for a cold week, and count the snow as odds, not a promise.
January is not a closed month: Munsiyari is a lived-in hill town and the variable is the drive rather than the destination. It is also the snowiest month in the normals, about 8 snow days with 28 nights below freezing and day highs of 7°C. Delhi schools are expected to be on winter break from 1 to 15 January 2027 on one aggregator's reading of the Directorate of Education calendar, which is when the first half of the month gets busiest. Snow remains odds and not a guarantee: in January 2026 visitors arrived for it and found none.
How we made this guide
The figures on this page are filled in from data each time it is built, never typed by hand: prices, days and nights from our package pages; road distances from OpenStreetMap, measured by a router (retrieved 22 September 2026); heights from the heights this site publishes; temperatures from 30-year ERA5-Land climate normals, modelled rather than measured at a weather station. If anything here is out of date, tell us on WhatsApp and we will correct it.
