Your side of the Adi Kailash Inner Line Permit, and the part we file for you

One Inner Line Permit covers both Adi Kailash and Om Parvat, and it is applied for online on the district permit portal and issued by the SDM's office at Dharchula. Your side of it is a government photo ID, passport-size photographs, a medical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner and a self-declaration affidavit, both formats downloadable on the portal. We file the permit before you arrive.

TL;DRThe post in 5 lines

  • The Inner Line Permit is issued on the morning of the Pithoragarh to Gunji day, so the vehicle can still climb into the valley that day.
  • Permit checks come at posts between Dharchula and the high valley, so keep your original photo ID on you rather than packed in the luggage.
  • The permit fee and processing time are set by the district administration and change between seasons, so Adi Kailash Explore confirms both in writing before you pay.
  • Adi Kailash from Delhi is ₹30,300 a person for 6 days, and that price carries transport, stays, breakfast and dinner, a government-certified guide and Inner Line Permit assistance.
  • No trek is asked of you: the circuit is driven, the highest night is at Gunji or Nabi, 3,200 m to about 3,290 m, and the plan holds an acclimatisation day with oxygen riding in the vehicles.

What is the Inner Line Permit for Adi Kailash?

It is the government's permission to enter the border valley above Dharchula, issued at the SDM office there, and one permit covers both Adi Kailash and Om Parvat.

Above Dharchula the road enters the inner line. The Kali runs below you with Nepal on the far bank, and from there the country asks who you are before it lets you go any further up the valley.

The paper that answers is the Inner Line Permit. It is not a ticket, not a booking and not something a travel site issues: it is a district administration document, and without it the barrier below Gunji is where your trip ends.

Does one permit cover Om Parvat as well?

Yes. Adi Kailash and Om Parvat are in the same border valley, so one Inner Line Permit covers both.

The darshan of Adi Kailash happens at Jolingkong, about 4,500 m, on the shore of Parvati Sarovar. Nabhidhang, for Om Parvat, is a different day in the same valley. Lipulekh, over 5,000 m, falls on the Om Parvat day of every Adi Kailash package we run, though whether Mount Kailash shows itself from up there rests on what the authorities allow that day.

Who issues it, and where?

The district administration, through the SDM office at Dharchula, about 91 km up the road from Pithoragarh.

Every requirement on this page is the government's, not ours. We prepare the file, we hand it in and we follow it: we do not decide what goes into it, and when the administration changes something, we change with it.

Do I need a Chinese visa too?

No. All three, Adi Kailash, Om Parvat and Lipulekh, stand inside India in Pithoragarh district, which leaves the Inner Line Permit as the single permit to apply for. The last stretch to Lipulekh also has to be cleared by the Army and ITBP on the day.

That confusion comes from the name. Mount Kailash and the Mansarovar lake are in Tibet and need Chinese permits; Adi Kailash stands in Uttarakhand's Vyas valley, with the same pyramid form over its own lake, reached by road.

Which documents do I need for the Adi Kailash permit?

Every traveller sends a government photo ID and passport-size photographs, and that is all it takes: Adi Kailash Explore files the permit at Dharchula before you arrive.

The list is shorter than the internet suggests. Most of what you will find online belongs to some other yatra, some other state, or some other year.

  • A government photo ID for every traveller in the party, children included
  • Passport-size photographs: carry a few spares in your bag
  • The original ID on you for the whole journey, not packed in the luggage
  • Your dates, your party size and the name each booking is in, so the file matches the vehicle

Send the ID in the same name as the booking. If a name is spelled differently across your documents, tell us early. That is far easier to sort out in Pithoragarh than at a counter in Dharchula on a morning when your vehicle should already be climbing.

What the administration asks for can change between seasons. Every week of the season we are on this road and at the Dharchula counter filing permits, so the list you receive is the one in force for your dates, not a leftover from last season.

Is a medical check-up or certificate needed?

Yes: the Inner Line Permit asks for a medical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner and a self-declaration affidavit, both formats on the portal.

There is a format to download from the portal, a registered medical practitioner's signature to collect and a self-declaration affidavit to sign before your dates. We file the permit with your photo ID and your photographs.

Which forms count?

The ones on the district permit portal, downloaded for your own dates, since the requirements can change by season.

Sample fitness certificates with Kailash in the title turn up all over search results. Use the portal's own formats instead: download them from the ILP steps page, and check the portal again for your dates.

The altitude still asks something of you

Jolingkong sits at about 4,500 m and Lipulekh at over 5,000 m, both reached by road, while Gunji at 3,200 m is where you sleep highest.

The certificate is paperwork, and the mountain does not care about paperwork. The altitude is what the plan answers to: the climb is gradual, a day goes to acclimatising, oxygen travels in the vehicles, and the guides will turn a day around sooner than push it past what it allows.

Before anything is fixed, tell us if anyone travelling has a heart or lung condition, asthma, blood pressure that is not under control or diabetes, is pregnant, or has come through surgery recently. If that gives us pause, you will hear it plainly. That conversation matters more than any form.

Can I get the Adi Kailash permit online?

Yes: apply online on the Pithoragarh ILP portal, with the permit issued by the SDM's office at Dharchula; Adi Kailash Explore can file it for its travellers.

Most people searching for Adi Kailash registration online are asking two things at once: how do I book the trip, and how does the permit get done. The first is a message. The second is a file that has to reach the SDM office in Dharchula.

What you can do from home

Send your documents, fix your dates and hold your seats, all before you leave your city.

  • Send scanned ID and photographs to us on WhatsApp
  • Get the route, the day plan and one price in writing
  • Hold a seat with ₹5,000, receipt and batch confirmation the same day: how booking works
  • Send any name corrections while there is still time to fix them

What has to happen at Dharchula

The file goes in ahead of you, and the permit is issued on the morning of the Pithoragarh to Gunji day.

That is why our packages put permit work on the morning of the day the vehicle climbs. You are not standing in a queue wondering whether you will reach Gunji before dark.

Counters and formats shift from one season to the next, so we would sooner tell you what holds this month than leave a screenshot here to go stale.

Ask us what this season's permit process is before you fix your dates.

What does the permit cost, and how long does it take?

The fee and the processing time are set by the administration and change between seasons, so Adi Kailash Explore confirms both in writing for your dates before you pay anything.

We do not publish a permit fee figure here, because it belongs to the district administration and we would only have to correct it. What is possible is a written confirmation of what applies on the dates you choose, sent before any money moves.

What our price includes

Transport across the whole route, stays, breakfast and dinner, a government-certified guide and Inner Line Permit assistance, itemised on the cost page.

At ₹30,300 a person for 6 days there and back, Adi Kailash from Delhi has you at Gunji on day 2, the permit done that same morning. Lunch and personal expenses are not included; driver allowance, tolls and parking already are.

How much time to allow before departure

Leave more margin than feels necessary: a departure holds only so many seats, and the permit file is prepared before you arrive.

The usual pattern is simple. You hold the seat, we start the paperwork, and the details get settled in writing while the dates are still yours to choose.

Ask us for this season's permit fee and timing before you book.

Is there an age limit for the Adi Kailash yatra?

Adi Kailash Explore publishes no age limit of its own: the administration decides who it issues the permit to, so send the ages in your party and the team confirms what applies.

This question usually comes from someone bringing a parent who has wanted Adi Kailash for thirty years. It deserves a straight answer rather than a number copied off another site.

Elderly travellers

For most, yes: there is no trek to it, the circuit is driven, and the highest night is spent at Gunji or Nabi, 3,200 m to about 3,290 m.

The walks are short, at the darshan points. A day is set aside to acclimatise, and oxygen goes wherever the vehicles go. What we ask in return is honesty about health before booking, not after the road has started climbing.

Children

Send the child's age and Adi Kailash Explore will give a straight view; families with young children are usually pointed towards Munsiyari instead.

Munsiyari and Khaliya Top sits lower and asks less, and still gives a reasonably fit family a proper morning trek. As things stand, no package carries a published child rate.

The cold is the part people underestimate. May nights at Gunji sit near 1°C with 10 frost nights across the month, and by October the low is about 0°C; month by month it is laid out in when to go. Warm layers are not optional in any month of the season.

Ask us before booking if anyone in your party has a heart, lung or blood-pressure condition.

Can foreign nationals get the permit?

Non-Indian nationals go through a process separate from the Inner Line Permit, so write to Adi Kailash Explore before booking anything and the team will confirm what applies.

The welcome is any faith, any passport, any reason. The paperwork is where it differs, and it is not a matter of adding a name to an Indian party's file.

Send us the passport details and the dates you have in mind and let us check before you buy a flight. You can write to us from wherever you are, and we will come back with what applies rather than what we hope applies.

Where is the permit checked on the road?

At posts between Dharchula and the high valley, where names are read off the list, which is why the original photo ID belongs in a pocket rather than the luggage.

Above Dharchula the road narrows and starts to climb, with the Kali cutting deeper below. Chialekh, Garbyang, the turns where the valley closes in: these are the stretches where a vehicle is stopped, names are read off the permit and faces are matched to ID cards.

It takes a few minutes when the papers are in order. It takes your whole day when they are not.

Weather governs the Gunji road, and the authorities can shut it at short notice whether or not a permit exists. If a leg is cut, the route shifts within the same valley, you hear about it as soon as we do, and any day that cannot run is not charged.

For the road itself, leg by leg out of Delhi, go to how to reach Adi Kailash.

Should I file the permit myself, or let an operator do it?

You can apply yourself at Dharchula; on Adi Kailash Explore packages the file is prepared before you arrive and the permit is issued on the Gunji morning.

Doing it yourself is allowed, and people do it. What it costs is time and certainty: reaching Dharchula, finding the counter open, learning on the day that one document is not what the office wants this season, and having no vehicle waiting if the morning runs long.

On our packages the documents are collected and checked before you travel, the file is handed in at Dharchula and followed, and the permit is issued on the Pithoragarh to Gunji morning so the climb still happens that day. If you would rather go without an operator, the buses, the counter and the shared vehicles beyond Dharchula are set out step by step in the yatra without a tour package.

Questions travellers ask

  • Yes, in the only sense that counts: the Vyas valley is closed to travellers without an Inner Line Permit, and that permit is filed in your name with a government photo ID and passport-size photographs. It is issued at the SDM office in Dharchula. On our packages we prepare and file it before you arrive, and it is issued on the morning of the Pithoragarh to Gunji day.

  • The Inner Line Permit is still how travellers enter the border valleys of Pithoragarh district, including Adi Kailash, Om Parvat and Lipulekh. The requirement has not gone away. What does change from season to season is the paperwork around it: which counter, which formats, what the administration asks for that year. Send your dates and Adi Kailash Explore will confirm what is in force now.

  • Send Adi Kailash Explore your dates, your party size and where you are travelling from, on WhatsApp. We come back with the route, the day-by-day plan and one price in writing. A seat holds with ₹5,000, receipt and batch confirmation following the same day, and the booking and payment terms go further. After that, a government photo ID and passport-size photographs come across for each traveller, and Adi Kailash Explore carries the permit file to Dharchula.

  • Download the form from the district's permit portal: Pithoragarh's ILP instructions carry the formats. The Inner Line Permit asks for a medical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner and a self-declaration affidavit, and the portal has both. Use its own formats rather than the samples in search results, and check it for your dates, since requirements can change by season. We also ask for honesty about heart, lung, blood-pressure or diabetes conditions, pregnancy or recent surgery before you book.

  • That is a different yatra. Mount Kailash and Mansarovar are in Tibet, reached through Chinese permits and a separate application, and we do not run it, so we will not quote requirements we cannot verify. Adi Kailash and Om Parvat are both inside India, and their Inner Line Permit wants a government photo ID, passport-size photographs, a medical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner and a self-declaration affidavit.

  • That date is not one Adi Kailash Explore can give, because Kailash Mansarovar is a different journey to a different mountain, and not one it handles. On the Adi Kailash and Om Parvat route no single national cut-off exists: departures run May to November, each one carries a finite number of seats, and the permit file is prepared before you arrive. The practical last date is when the departure you want fills.

How we made this guide

The figures on this page are filled in from data each time it is built, never typed by hand: prices, days and nights from our package pages; road distances from OpenStreetMap, measured by a router (retrieved 22 September 2026); heights from Wikidata, the Copernicus 90 m elevation model and the heights this site publishes; temperatures from 30-year ERA5-Land climate normals, modelled rather than measured at a weather station. If anything here is out of date, tell us on WhatsApp and we will correct it.
