Munsiyari to Darma Valley by road: the hours each stretch really takes
Munsiyari to Dharchula runs about 94 km, and the Darma turn climbs from there to Sobla. Sobla is about 37 km from Dharchula, and that link leg is the piece nobody writes down. Here it is in order, with the side to drive first and the nights that follow.

TL;DRThe post in 5 lines
- Count the Munsiyari to Darma run as one full driving day, the long leg down to Dharchula and the short one up to Sobla.
- Drive the Munsiyari side first and the trip's highest nights fall last, at Dantu.
- Adi Kailash Explore runs Darma over 6 days from Haldwani at ₹50,000 a person: Dantu twice, with the Panchachuli day in between.
- Three days from Munsiyari leaves nothing spare: one road block costs you the valley day, not an hour of it.
- Darma is Inner Line Permit country: you file online, and the SDM at Dharchula issues it. Departures run 1 May to 20 November.

How far is Darma Valley from Munsiyari, and how long is the drive?
Count about 94 km down to Dharchula, then about 37 km up to Sobla on the Darma road.
The drive comes in three pieces. The long one is Munsiyari down to Dharchula. The short one is Dharchula to Sobla, by way of the Darma turn. The last piece climbs above Sobla to Dugtu and Dantu, and no two seasons leave it the same.
Munsiyari to Dharchula: about 94 km down to the river
The run down to Dharchula is about 94 km by road through Jauljibi, losing height most of the way.
You spend the first part of this leg going down. At Jauljibi the Gori runs into the Kali, and you're down at about 610 m. Dharchula, upstream of it, is 908 m. Figures like that explain why a short line on a map takes so long to drive.
Dharchula to Sobla: about 37 km, and the turn at Tawaghat
Dharchula to Sobla measures about 37 km, and the Darma road leaves the Kali at Tawaghat, about 1,160 m.
At Tawaghat the Dhauli Ganga joins the Kali. The Adi Kailash road keeps straight on, up the Kali towards Gunji. Yours turns and climbs the Dhauli Ganga to Sobla, about 1,870 m. That junction is where the trip stops being a hill drive.
Sobla to Dugtu and Dantu: the stretch that keeps moving
The climb from Sobla to Dugtu and Dantu carries no published figure here, because how far vehicles run shifts through the season.
Dantu sits at the top of that climb. Baling, below it, is about 3,120 m. So the last stretch does most of the day's climbing. What a driver saw that morning beats any figure typed weeks before.
Google Maps, Instagram posts and riders' own videos quote around 170 km door to door, and five and a half to eight hours with it. The two legs measured here sit inside that. Treat it as a full day rather than a number of hours: leave Munsiyari early, and be above Sobla in daylight.
| Leg | km (OpenStreetMap) | Height at the end |
|---|---|---|
| Munsiyari to Dharchula | 94 | 908 m |
| Dharchula to Sobla | 37 | About 1,870 m |
| Sobla to Dugtu and Dantu | ask us | About 3,150 m |
The drive in order: Munsiyari, Jauljibi, Dharchula, Tawaghat, Sobla
The road runs Munsiyari, Jauljibi, Dharchula, Tawaghat, then up the Dhauli Ganga through Sobla, Nagling and Baling to Dantu.
Put the names in order and the day makes sense. Munsiyari stands high over the Gori valley. The road drops to the river, follows it down to Jauljibi, then turns up the Kali for Dharchula. Past Tawaghat, the road up the Dhauli Ganga is the Darma road.

Munsiyari down to Jauljibi
This is the long half of the day. The road loses height, then runs beside water the rest of the way. Jauljibi, about 610 m, is where the Gori gives up its name to the Kali.
Jauljibi to Dharchula, along the Kali
From here the road follows the Kali. The bends keep the speed down whatever the surface is doing. Dharchula is 908 m, a bazaar on the Kali below both valleys.

The turn at Tawaghat, and Sobla
Tawaghat, about 1,160 m, is a junction more than a town. Above it the Darma road climbs into a tighter valley. Sobla, about 1,870 m, sits on that road above the turn.
Above Sobla: Nagling, Baling, Dugtu, Dantu
The villages run in a line up the Dhauli Ganga: Sobla first, then Nagling, Baling at about 3,120 m, and Dugtu and Dantu at the head. These are lived-in Rung villages. Here the vehicle under you counts for more than the kilometres.
Riders ask each other about the surface every season, and those answers age within weeks. So don't commit a motorcycle or a low car to the last climb on a report from an earlier season.
Munsiyari first, or Darma first?
Munsiyari first is the better order on altitude, because the trip's highest nights then fall last, at Dantu.
Munsiyari's nights are the lower of the two, so taking that side first leaves the climb to Dantu, about 3,150 m, for later in the trip rather than the start of it. One case flips it: late in the season, take the high valley while it is open, because departures run only to 20 November.
Which of the two to give your days to in the first place, and what changes for parents over 60, a photographer or a solo traveller, is settled in the verdict for each traveller.
Night by night: the Darma days, and where Munsiyari fits
Adi Kailash Explore runs Darma over 6 days from Haldwani, with two nights at Dantu and one at Pithoragarh.
These days count from Haldwani, because that's where the Darma trip starts. From Delhi the same valley takes 6 days, with the first day spent reaching Pithoragarh and the second one driving in through Dharchula and Sobla.
Day 1: Haldwani to Pithoragarh and on to Dantu
Day 1 drives from Haldwani through Pithoragarh and into the valley, finishing at the homestay in Dantu, about 3,150 m.
It's the long one. You start on the plains at 424 m and sleep at Dantu, which is a lot of height for one day. Say something early if your head starts to thump.
Day 2: Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point, and Duktu
Day 2 heads for Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point if the road allows, then Duktu and a second night at Dantu.
This is the day you came for, and the only day of this trip spent on foot. The peaks are at the head of the valley, close enough that the light changes them through the morning. The night is at Dantu again, so you're not packing and moving.
Day 3: Dantu down to Pithoragarh
Day 3 comes back down the valley and the Kali road to a hotel night at Pithoragarh, 1,645 m.
That day is the link leg in reverse. Pithoragarh is 1,645 m, and the night there is a hotel bed after two in a family house. Pithoragarh is there to break the drive.

Day 4: Pithoragarh to Haldwani
Day 4 drives down to Haldwani for the drop, which is where the 6-day trip ends.
Keep the evening loose. A mountain road and a fixed train time are poor companions, so leave yourself a margin at the Haldwani end.
Where Munsiyari goes in that plan
Munsiyari runs as its own trip: 4 days from Haldwani, 5 days from Delhi, with the Khaliya Top morning in it. Joining the two valleys means adding the link leg to one of those plans, and whether that fits your dates is a conversation, not a shelf product.
| Day | From | To | Night | Night's altitude |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Haldwani | Dantu | Homestay, Dantu | About 3,150 m |
| 2 | Dantu | Base camp or Zero Point, Duktu | Homestay, Dantu | About 3,150 m |
| 3 | Dantu | Pithoragarh | Hotel, Pithoragarh | 1,645 m |
| 4 | Pithoragarh | Haldwani | Drop | 424 m |
Can Darma Valley be done in three days from Munsiyari?
Three days works only as drive, valley, drive, with nothing spare for a road block or a bad morning.
On paper it fits. Day one, Munsiyari to Dantu. Day two, the walk towards base camp and Duktu. Day three, down and out.
What breaks is the margin. The link leg is a whole driving day, and a landslip or a stuck truck doesn't cost you an hour, it costs you the valley day. There's no second chance in the plan: you're back in the vehicle the next morning either way.
Beds are the other catch. We don't know how many rooms those houses keep free, so four of you turning up unannounced is a gamble.
We'd add the fourth day and sleep twice at Dantu, because that's the day that protects the morning you actually came for. If you can't, don't bring elderly parents or small children on the three-day version, and don't book a train out for the evening you come down.
How do I get from Munsiyari to Darma Valley without my own vehicle?
Two hops do it, as travellers describe them: a shared jeep seat as far as Dharchula, then a hired vehicle up the Darma road.
The Munsiyari to Dharchula half is ordinary Kumaon travel. That rests on a single traveller's report of a shared taxi as far as Dharchula, not on any service with published timings. We have no timetable for them, so ask on your dates.
Above Dharchula you're arranging, not boarding. One traveller's own report of the run describes reaching Dharchula by shared taxi, then gathering a couple of others there to book one vehicle into the valley. Fix the return in the same conversation, rather than once you are up there.
For the hops above Dharchula, one by one, read how far Dantu is without a car.
Do you need a permit for Darma Valley?
Yes: the Inner Line Permit covers Darma, you file it online on the district portal, and Dharchula's SDM issues it.
The paperwork moved online on 20 February 2025, for the Vyas and Darma valleys alike. You fill the form on the district's ILP portal. At Dharchula, the SDM (sub-divisional magistrate) issues what comes back.
Your part is short. Your side is a government photo ID and passport-size photographs. The portal hands you the other two: a self-declaration affidavit and a fitness certificate that a registered doctor signs (read 25 September 2026). Rules shift season to season, so read the portal against your own dates.
Adi Kailash Explore files the permit for its travellers before they arrive, Darma included. Going up on your own? File it well before your dates, not on the morning you're hoping to drive up.
Foreign nationals
Non-Indian passport holders go through a different process than the Inner Line Permit, so write in before booking anything.
Write to us first and we confirm what applies before any money moves. The welcome is any passport; the paperwork is simply not the same paperwork.
Where the papers get checked on the Darma road
Who looks at your permit and ID on this road follows the season's arrangements, so keep copies in the bag and the ID in a pocket rather than the boot. If you want the permit in full detail, the part of the permit you do yourself goes through it.
Ask us which papers are being checked on the Darma road this month, and how many copies to carry.
Which months suit both valleys, and can you go in winter?
May, June, September and October suit both sides, and Adi Kailash Explore's departures run 1 May to 20 November.
May and June are the warm, settled end of the season. Dharchula averages 28°C by day in May, which is shirt weather on the river. Munsiyari the same month runs 19°C days and 7°C nights.
September and October are the clearer half, once the monsoon has washed the air. Munsiyari's rain drops to 53 mm in October. Frost is already creeping back by then: 2 frost nights in October, against 11 in November.
| Month | Munsiyari high / low | Munsiyari rain | Dharchula high / low |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | 19°C / 7°C | 101 mm | 28°C / 16°C |
| June | 21°C / 12°C | 315 mm | 28°C / 20°C |
| September | 20°C / 12°C | 288 mm | 26°C / 19°C |
| October | 17°C / 5°C | 53 mm | 24°C / 13°C |
Monsoon: why July and August break this pairing
July and August bring Munsiyari 837 mm and 825 mm of rain, with the road trouble that follows.
Rain like that doesn't just spoil the view. We keep this pairing out of July and August. Leave those weeks alone. Munsiyari's own swing is set out month by month in Munsiyari weather.
Can you go to Darma Valley in winter?
Adi Kailash Explore's departures run 1 May to 20 November, so the answer for winter dates is no.
Munsiyari alone sees 8 snow days and 28 frost nights in January, and the upper Darma valley sits far higher than Munsiyari. The rooms up there are family houses. Come back in May.
Two climates, one bag
Dharchula is low and can be hot: 908 m. Your bed at Dantu is far higher again. Pack for both, whatever the month promises: a shirt for the river, and a jacket you'd trust at night above the villages.
The same five peaks, from Munsiyari and from Dantu
Panchachuli is one massif of five summits, seen long and low from Munsiyari and close up from Dugtu and Dantu.
From Munsiyari you get the whole wall at distance, best in the first light before the valley hazes over, and you walk nowhere for it. From Dugtu and Dantu the massif shuts the head of the valley, and the faces shift as the sun comes round. The walk towards Panchachuli Base Camp is a separate day on foot, road conditions permitting.
Which side gets which light, morning and evening, and which one suits the pictures you want, is compared in the same Panchachuli from two sides.

Where you sleep on each side, and what to settle in Dharchula
Munsiyari is a town with rooms to book; the upper Darma valley has homestays in family houses at Dugtu, Dantu and Nagling.
The upper Darma valley doesn't work like that.
Up there you're a guest in someone's house. Uttarakhand's tourism board puts 12 tribal villages in Darma taking visitors through homestays, and names a few on its own booking site: Nyola Homestay and Old Is Gold Homestay in Dugtu, Rajendra Singh Homestay at Nagling (read September 2026). Our valley nights are at Dantu.
Treat the house as a house. Ask before your camera points at a family or their windows, take your rubbish back down the valley with you, and don't go looking for a reception desk.
At that height the warm layer in your bag earns its place. Even so, you wake up beneath the massif rather than studying it from a town.
Dharchula settles the practical list. Cash above all: we cannot confirm which machine on this road is the last one working, so draw what you need at Dharchula before you climb. The district names hotels, lodges and guest houses in the bazaar, and KMVN's rest house takes online bookings if you want a night before the climb.
Is adding Darma to a Munsiyari trip worth it?
Worth it if the peaks are why you travel and the days are there; not worth it on a four-day trip.
Photographers get two angles on the same five summits in one run, one long and one close, and slow travellers get a valley where the day ends when the light does. On four days, two of them go on driving and the valley gets a single morning. The Darma side runs 6 days from Haldwani at ₹50,000 a person, Munsiyari 4 days on its own.
For the choice itself, trip by trip and traveller by traveller, read which one to pick for your days and your group.

Questions travellers ask
A direct cab from Munsiyari into the valley is not something Adi Kailash Explore can promise on the day. What one traveller's report describes is a change of vehicle at Dharchula rather than one cab the whole way. With four of you, hiring one vehicle for the whole run is worth asking about rather than looking for seats at Dharchula. Message us your dates and we'll tell you what's possible for them.
Rates are set house by house up there, so no single figure holds for long. Uttarakhand's tourism board does print prices for a few Dugtu and Nagling houses on its own booking site, which is the nearest thing to a published number. On our Darma trip the Dantu nights are already inside ₹50,000 a person from Haldwani.
Adi Kailash Explore cannot confirm what network reaches beyond Dharchula, so plan for none up the valley. A message from Dantu is not something to count on. Warn people at home that you'll be quiet for a day or two, pull your maps down while you're still in Dharchula, and pack a power bank. Ask us before you go up.
Riders do get up there, and the state of that road is what they ask each other about every season. A surface report a month old is worth little on this road. So ask us the week you ride instead of trusting anything written down, this page included.
Start from the two trips as they run: Darma is 6 days from Haldwani, Munsiyari 4 days, each with its drive in and out. The link leg between the valleys is a full driving day in each direction. So a trip doing both honestly sits well above either figure. Send your dates and the days you can spare, and we'll come back on whether both valleys fit them.
How we made this guide
The figures on this page are filled in from data each time it is built, never typed by hand: prices, days and nights from our package pages; road distances from OpenStreetMap, measured by a router (retrieved 22 September 2026); heights from Wikidata, the Copernicus 90 m elevation model and the heights this site publishes; temperatures from 30-year ERA5-Land climate normals, modelled rather than measured at a weather station.
