Munsiyari or Darma Valley, with a plain verdict for first-timers, parents and trekkers
Take Munsiyari if your days are few: 4 days from Haldwani, and no night above a hill town. Take Darma if you want Panchachuli close, and will sleep at Dantu, about 3,150 m. Both look at the same five summits, one from across a valley and one from underneath. The choice comes down to days, the height of your night, and who is walking.

TL;DRThe post in 5 lines
- Munsiyari suits a first Himalayan trip and fewer days: Adi Kailash Explore runs it in 4 days from Haldwani, with no permit and no high night.
- Darma Valley puts you under the Panchachuli, with nights at Dantu, about 3,150 m, on a 6-day trip from Haldwani at ₹50,000 a person.
- The Darma side needs an Inner Line Permit, applied for online and issued at Dharchula. Munsiyari needs no permit at all.
- Panchachuli reads as a long panorama from Munsiyari and as a near wall from Dugtu and Dantu, the same massif from two sides.
- Doing both in one trip means about 94 km between Munsiyari and Dharchula, with the Darma road leaving the Kali at Tawaghat.

Munsiyari or Darma Valley: the short answer
Munsiyari suits few days and mixed fitness, while Darma suits travellers who want Panchachuli close and accept a homestay.
People come to this question with both names in their head and a fixed number of days. Munsiyari is a town: you drive in, take a hotel room, and the Panchachuli stands across the valley. Darma is a line of Rung villages at the end of a rough road, where you sleep in a family's house under the same peaks.
That one difference settles most of the rest.
Pick Munsiyari if this is your first Himalayan trip, or your days are few
Munsiyari needs no permit, and you sleep in the town itself, so a mixed group manages it.
Munsiyari works because everything sits close to the vehicle. You pass Birthi Falls and Kalamuni Top on the way in, before the hotel key is in your hand. Adi Kailash Explore runs the trip in 4 days from Haldwani and 5 days from Delhi. One walking morning sits inside it, Khaliya Top, and you can take that slowly.
Pick Darma if you want the peaks close, and will take the road and the room as they come
Above Dharchula the Darma road turns off at Tawaghat, follows the Dhauli Ganga and climbs past Sobla, about 37 km from Dharchula. From there it carries on to Dugtu and Dantu. You sleep at Dantu, about 3,150 m, in a Rung family's home. (Other pages call the community Bhotiya. Rung is their own name.)
The question that decides it: how many days, and who's walking
A tight count of days, or one person in the group who will not walk, points the decision at Munsiyari.
Will four days do for Darma? From Haldwani, yes: 6 days, one full day in the valley with the drive up and back around it. Take a day out and you take out the valley day. That day is the reason for the drive.
The two side by side: days, driving, your night, walking, rooms and cost
Munsiyari costs less, drives less and sleeps lower, while Darma asks a rougher road, a higher night and a homestay.
Five things actually differ between them: the drive, the height of your night, how much you walk, what the room is, and the price. The rest is scenery, and neither side lacks it.
| What decides it | Munsiyari | Darma valley |
|---|---|---|
| Days from Haldwani | 4 | 6 |
| Days from Delhi | 5 | 6 |
| Road distance from Haldwani | About 285 km | About 276 km to Dharchula, then about 37 km to Sobla |
| Where you sleep | Hotel or guest house in town | Rung homestay at Dantu |
| Height of your night | Town on a ridge; our climate point is modelled at 2,155 m | About 3,150 m, at Dantu |
| Walking included | The Khaliya Top morning | The day towards Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point |
| Permit | None | Inner Line Permit, filed online, issued at Dharchula |
| Price a person | ₹14,400 | ₹50,000 |
Driving: the kilometres, not the hours
Munsiyari lies about 285 km from Haldwani, and Darma begins with a similar drive to Dharchula before the climb starts.
From Pithoragarh it's about 125 km on to Munsiyari, and the road climbs to Kalamuni Top before it drops into the town. It is surfaced the whole way in, which is part of why this side asks so little of you. A kilometre here is not a kilometre on the plains.
On the Darma side the rough part comes last. You'll read the valley described as a long walk from Sobla, and elsewhere as a drive with no trek in it. As of October 2026 vehicles run up to Dugtu and Dantu, but where the drivable road ends changes from year to year, so we confirm the day's road head before a departure leaves.
The height you sleep at, and the 3,470 m you may have read
Uttarakhand Tourism's destination page gives the valley as about 3,470 m, but the figure that matters is Dantu's night.
A valley has no single height. Sobla, at its mouth, sits at about 1,870 m. Dantu, where you sleep, sits at about 3,150 m. Take the second one, because that's the one you spend the night at.
On the Darma trip from Delhi you pass Dharchula on day two. Dharchula sits at 908 m. Your bed that night is at about 3,150 m. That's a real gain in one day, and some people feel it as a headache or a broken night.
A heart condition, a chest condition or blood pressure on tablets changes this decision, and so does bringing parents over 60. Ask your own doctor about a night at about 3,150 m first, then tell us what they said. The altitude answers in our FAQ are the plain version.
Our normals cover Munsiyari and Dharchula, not Dantu. Carry a warm layer for that night in any month.
Rooms, food and bathrooms: hotel against Rung homestay
Munsiyari has hotels and guest houses, and Darma nights are homestays with Rung families, plain rooms in working houses.
On our Darma trips both valley nights are at Dantu, with breakfast and dinner included and lunch on the road yours. Uttarakhand Tourism's own booking site lists houses at Dugtu and Nagling by name, Nyola Homestay and Old Is Gold among them (read 29 September 2026). That tells you the kind of place it is.
That isn't a hotel, and it isn't sold as one. What it means in beds, blankets, hot water and whether the toilet is inside differs house to house. So ask for the house we're using on your dates before you picture it.
Signal and cash on each side
Munsiyari is a town with a market, and the signal up the Darma valley is patchy at best.
We do not know which operator works where. Dharchula is the last proper bazaar on this road, so sort your cash out there. Then tell whoever worries about you that they'll hear from you on the way down.
What each side costs for the same number of days
From Haldwani, Munsiyari costs ₹14,400 a person and Darma ₹50,000 a person, over the same 6 days.
From Delhi, Munsiyari is ₹20,400 a person over 5 days. The Darma Valley trip from Haldwani has a Delhi version at ₹55,000 a person. Each price carries the vehicle for the whole route, your stays, two meals a day and the local team with you. Lunch on the road and anything personal are yours, on either side.
The permit is the one cost that lands only on the Darma side, and our office does that paperwork ahead of your dates.
The same Panchachuli from two sides, and which side gets which light
Munsiyari gives Panchachuli as a long panorama across a valley, while Dugtu and Dantu put you under it.
People think they're choosing between two views. They're choosing between two distances from one massif, and that changes the picture more than a different mountain would.
What you see from Munsiyari
From Munsiyari the Panchachuli stands across the Gori valley as a long white line, the whole range in one frame.
You get it from the ridge, from a hotel terrace, and from the Khaliya meadow if you walk up. Distance does something useful here: the five summits read as a range, with sky around them. Morning is the hour for it.

What you see from Dugtu and Dantu
This is the near view, with fields, roofs and a path in the foreground for scale. The valley day goes towards Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point, as the road that week allows, and Duktu village after it. Nothing about it is a panorama.
Which side for photographs
Munsiyari suits a panorama of the whole range, and Dantu suits scale, with houses and fields under the peaks.
Both are morning places. First light is when the range separates from the sky, so be up for it. If you have two clear mornings and one choice to make, we'd take Darma: the near wall is the harder picture to get anywhere else.
Which peak is it, and can you see Nanda Devi from Munsiyari?
The wall in front of Munsiyari is the Panchachuli massif, five summits on one mountain, not Nanda Devi.
Munsiyari has a Nanda Devi temple, which is where some of the confusion starts, and it sits on our Munsiyari route. We hold no sightline for Nanda Devi from the town, so treat any claim of one as unsettled. What stands across the valley is Panchachuli.
Ask in Kumaon why the mountain carries that name and you'll hear about the Pandavas: five cooking hearths lit on the way north, and never put out since. That is the story people here tell, not a geologist's account.
How many days does each one need?
Darma needs 6 days from Haldwani at the least, and Munsiyari fits comfortably into the same four.
How many days are enough for Darma Valley?
Four days from Haldwani is the working minimum: the drive up, one full day in the valley, then the drive back.
- Day 1: Haldwani to Dantu by way of Pithoragarh. A long one.
- Day 2: the valley day, towards Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point, then Duktu.
- Day 3: back down the valley to Pithoragarh.
- Day 4: Pithoragarh to Haldwani.
From Delhi the same trip takes 6 days, with the first night at Pithoragarh and the climb into the valley on day two.
How many days for Munsiyari?
Munsiyari runs in 4 days from Haldwani and 5 days from Delhi, with the drive both ways inside those days.
The extra day from Delhi is road, not sightseeing. Both versions keep a full day at the town and the Khaliya morning, which is what the trip is for.
Can Darma be done in three days, and what do you lose?
Three days can reach the valley, but they remove the day in it, which is the whole reason for going.
The arithmetic is unkind. Only one of the four days is spent in the valley, so a three-day version drives up, sleeps once and turns around in the morning. You'd have paid for a road and seen it twice. If your return is fixed and close, take Munsiyari instead of squeezing Darma.
Where the extra day actually goes
A fifth day buys weather, a road closure or a slow morning, rather than another sight. Every package can also leave on your own dates as your own group, so an extra day isn't a special favour. Say so when you send your dates. Book the train home loose, or don't book the valley.
Which one for you: a first trip, parents over 60, travelling alone, a photographer, a trekker
First trips, parents over 60 and fixed returns point to Munsiyari, while photographers and walkers get more from Darma.
A first Himalayan trip
First-timers do better at Munsiyari: no permit, no high night, and the mountains in view from the hotel.
A first trip is mostly about finding out how you travel on these roads: how your stomach takes the bends, how early you'll get up, how much sitting you can do in a day. Munsiyari answers all of that without the Dantu night on top. Darma will still be there next season, and you'll be a better judge of it.
Parents over 60, and knees that complain on stairs
Munsiyari for most parents, and Darma only after their own doctor has looked at a night at about 3,150 m.
Both trips are driven rather than trekked, so the walking isn't usually the problem. The night is. Tell us what their health is like before you book: the chest, the pressure, a recent operation. We'll say honestly what we think rather than take the booking and hope.
A woman travelling alone
Both work solo on a shared departure, though Darma means a family's house rather than a hotel with a reception desk.
A scheduled departure is a shared group, so going alone doesn't mean hiring a vehicle to yourself. Rooms are shared, two to five people, and a private room can be asked for. Nobody can promise safety on a mountain road.
What we can say is narrower, and more useful. The driving is done in daylight. The Dantu night is in a family home, with the family in it. And the people answering your messages from Pithoragarh are the ones who meet you at the railhead. Ask about a room held for you alone before you pay anything.
A photographer with two clear mornings
Darma, for the near wall, because the Munsiyari panorama is the easier picture of the two.
From Dantu the peaks stand over the houses, and that is the photographer's reason to go. Treat the houses and the people in them as neighbours rather than subjects: ask first, and the day goes better for everyone.
A trekker who wants the base camp walk
Darma, clearly: the day towards Panchachuli Base Camp is a walk, and Khaliya Top is a morning.
On our Darma trip that day runs as far as the road and the weather allow, with Zero Point as the turn when the road says so. It's a walking day on a driven trip, not a week on foot from Sobla.
If one of you doesn't like trekking
Darma still works when one person won't walk, though the base camp day is the valley's best day.
What the Darma days look like without the base camp walk
Day two is the walking day, and a traveller who skips it keeps the village, the valley and the peaks overhead.
On the 6-day trip, day two goes towards Panchachuli Base Camp or Zero Point, with Duktu after it. Someone who doesn't want that can stay at Dantu, where the mountains stand above the houses all day. How far a vehicle can carry a non-walker towards the base camp side depends on the road that week, so we check it rather than promise it.
The walking day starts early and ends in the same house. You're apart for a morning, not for the trip.
When this is the reason to choose Munsiyari
If the non-walker also dislikes rough roads or plain rooms, Munsiyari is the better trip for both of you.
Be honest about which of the three it is. Walking is easy to work around. A rough last stretch and a simple room are the trip itself, and no itinerary makes them disappear. In that case Munsiyari gives you the same five summits and a hotel to come back to.
Can you do Munsiyari and Darma Valley in one trip?
Both fit in one trip: Munsiyari to Dharchula runs about 94 km, and the Darma road climbs from above that town.
Where the Munsiyari road and the Darma road part
Tawaghat is the parting: the Kali carries on north, and the Dhauli Ganga takes you into Darma.
From Munsiyari the road runs down the Gori to Jauljibi, then up the Kali to Dharchula. Tawaghat comes after that, and the Darma turn climbs from there past Sobla. The kilometre-by-kilometre version is in where the Darma road turns off.
Munsiyari first, or Darma first?
Munsiyari first reads better, because the lower nights come before the night at Dantu.
You sleep low, spend a day in the hills, then take the climb to Dantu with a couple of nights already behind you. The other order puts your highest night first, straight off a train. There's a bigger version of this logic in Adi Kailash and Darma Valley in one trip, where the same junction serves two valleys.
What the combination asks, honestly
No combined Munsiyari and Darma package sits in Adi Kailash Explore's price list today, so the shape comes by message.
The days and the price come by message, once we've settled them. What we can tell you now is the shape: the two valleys share one road as far as Dharchula, and the days you add are mostly the climb up the Darma side and back down.
Which months suit which, and is Darma Valley open in winter?
Adi Kailash Explore runs Darma 1 May to 20 November, and Munsiyari holds up across a wider spread of months.
Which month is the best to visit Darma Valley?
October first, then May, the two driest ends of the season Adi Kailash Explore runs in the valley.
We hold no normals for the Darma villages, so the approach road is the fair guide. Dharchula gets 30 mm of rain in October against 495 mm in July. May is dry too, at 40 mm. September is not: Dharchula still takes 191 mm that month, so the rain hasn't finished by then.
We'd pick October for clear peaks, and May if those dates don't suit.
The best months for Munsiyari
October and November are the driest months at Munsiyari.
October is not winter at Munsiyari. The thirty-year normals give 17°C days and 5°C nights, with 2 frost nights in the month and 53 mm of rain. November is nearly as dry, at 49 mm, and colder with it. The month-by-month detail sits in Munsiyari weather, month by month.
Monsoon: what it does to each side
July and August carry the heaviest rain on both sides, and the Darma road is the one that suffers for it.
Munsiyari's normals run to 837 mm in July and 825 mm in August, which is a great deal of water for a hill town. The same weeks on the Darma side land on the rough stretch above Sobla. Rain and a rough hill road don't improve each other.
When the Darma road is shut, and the dates we run
Adi Kailash Explore's scheduled Darma departures run 1 May to 20 November, and by mid-November the valley's families begin moving down.
Winter up there is not a season we run: the villages empty as the families come down. A Darma departure offered for late November or December falls outside the window we run. At Munsiyari the normals give January nights at -4°C and 8 snow days in the month.
Getting there, and the permit each side needs
The Darma valley needs an Inner Line Permit, filed online for the Dharchula sub-division, and Munsiyari needs none.
How to visit Darma Valley, in short
Reach Dharchula, turn up the Dhauli Ganga at Tawaghat, and carry on through Sobla to Dugtu and Dantu.
Dharchula is about 276 km from Haldwani and about 570 km from Delhi, so our trips break the drive at Pithoragarh. Sobla sits about 37 km above Dharchula. The full drive is laid out in the road up to Darma Valley, and the villages in the Rung villages at the road's end.

Can we reach Darma Valley by car?
Yes, as of October 2026 vehicles reach Dugtu and Dantu, though the last stretch wants a hill vehicle and a hill driver.
This is a drive with a walking day in it. Without your own vehicle, shared jeeps out of Dharchula are the method, and the seat chain is set out in getting up the Darma road without a car.
What paper each side needs
Munsiyari needs no permit at all, while the Darma valley needs the Inner Line Permit.
Since 20 February 2025 the whole application has been online, on the district's portal at ilppithoragarh.uk.gov.in, and the sub-divisional magistrate at Dharchula is the officer who grants it. The portal's own list (read 25 September 2026) adds a fitness certificate signed by a doctor and a signed self-declaration, with formats to download. Bring photo ID and a few passport photographs.
What the portal asks for can shift with the season, so read it for your own dates. Our team files this permit for Darma travellers well ahead of the departure, and the part you do yourself covers your side of it.
Reaching Munsiyari, in short
Every traveller reaches Munsiyari by road: about 282 km from Kathgodam, about 623 km from Delhi.
Kathgodam, beside Haldwani, is the railhead for the Munsiyari road. For Pithoragarh and Dharchula, Tanakpur is nearer by road: about 147 km against about 183 km. Pithoragarh's own airstrip at Naini Saini is the closest one, but flights there start and stop: a Delhi service landed on 7 November 2024, and a Dehradun service came back three days a week on 26 March 2026. Pantnagar, down on the plains near Haldwani, is the other airport travellers use. The legs are in the road to Munsiyari, leg by leg.
When to pick neither, and take Munsiyari with a Khaliya day
Four days with one walking morning in them suit Munsiyari and Khaliya Top better than a rushed Darma run.
There is a third answer. If Darma's night and last stretch sound like more than your group wants, the alternative isn't a shorter Darma. It's Munsiyari with a day on foot: Munsiyari and Khaliya Top, 4 days out of Haldwani, ₹14,400 each.

What Khaliya Top asks of you
Khaliya is a meadow walk above Munsiyari, a morning rather than a trek, and it can be taken slowly.
You climb out of the treeline into open grass with the range in front of you. It's a morning, and a reasonably fit family manages it. How far a vehicle goes towards the meadow, and whether a pony can be arranged, changes with the season and the week. Thamri Kund is the other place people ask about on this side.
When to postpone Darma to a longer trip
Darma deserves a trip built around it, so a fixed return and a tight count of days are the wrong frame for it.
The rooms up the valley are plain, and the last stretch of road is slow. Even so, Darma is the valley for anyone who wants Panchachuli near. Keep it for the trip where you have the days.

Questions travellers ask
Munsiyari is known for one thing: the Panchachuli view from a town a car can reach. It sits on a ridge in the Gori valley of Pithoragarh district. Hotels, a market, a tribal museum, and the five summits across the valley. Birthi Falls and Kalamuni Top come before it on the road in, and the Khaliya meadow rises above it.
Khaliya Top, Birthi Falls, Kalamuni Top with its Kali temple, the Nanda Devi temple, the tribal museum, and Darkot. Both our Munsiyari routes pass Darkot, and pick most of the rest up on the way in and out. The longer list, in the order you pass them, is in 13 places to visit in Munsiyari.
Khaliya Top is the walk most travellers take from Munsiyari, a meadow morning above the town, and Thamri Kund is the other one people ask about. The Khaliya day sits inside our Munsiyari and Khaliya Top trip. The long routes out of the Gori valley are trekking trips in their own right, with their own planning, and they don't bolt onto a 4-day drive.
Adi Kailash Explore keeps the Dantu homestay inside the trip price, so nothing is settled by the night up the valley: ₹50,000 a person for 6 days from Haldwani, stays and two meals a day included. Going independently, Uttarakhand Tourism's homestay booking site lists houses at Dugtu and Nagling with their own rates, which is the fairest place to read current figures.
Shared jeeps out of Dharchula are the way up. The practical method is to be in Dharchula the evening before, ask at the stand, and leave early. Treat any timing you read online as a hint. Dharchula to Dantu, and getting a seat has the chain in order.
Yes, if the near view of Panchachuli is what you want and a village homestay doesn't put you off. You get the peaks above the houses and a walking day towards base camp. It isn't worth it on three days, with a fixed return that evening, or for a traveller who wants a hotel at the end of the day.
How we made this guide
The figures on this page are filled in from data each time it is built, never typed by hand: prices, days and nights from our package pages; road distances from OpenStreetMap, measured by a router (retrieved 22 September 2026); heights from Wikidata and the Copernicus 90 m elevation model; temperatures from 30-year ERA5-Land climate normals, modelled rather than measured at a weather station. If anything here is out of date, tell us on WhatsApp and we will correct it.
